Manaus contains a mixture of narrow streets, broad avenues, 19th century historic achitecture and unforgettable adventures on the river and in the jungle with beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The Amazon is the second largest river in the world which serves as the only link between towns and villages where no roads exist. The rivers offer more than 2,000 different species of fish, from small sardines to the enormous Pirarucu (Amazon cod), to Tucunaré (Amazon Peacock Bass) and even the dreaded Piranhas. The city of Manaus was founded in 1669 as the fort of São José do Rio Negro. It was elevated/ became to a town in 1832 with the name of “Vila Manaós”, and legally transformed into a city “Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro” on October 24th of 1848. Only on September 4th of 1856 the city received the current name Manaus. The name of Manaus is a tribute to the indigenous nation of Manaós who used to live in this area and its name means “Mother of God”.
